I always use miles for free tickets rather than upgrades. I look at how much the ticket costs without the miles. On Continental, its the same number of miles for all domestic tickets -- and going to visit my brother in college in Burlington, VT or taking a last minute trip for a family emegergency could be expensive, $400 or more. Whereas, well in-advance trips to big hub cities like Houston or Atlanta were relatively cheap, like $200. So I tried to always use my miles for more expensive or last minute flights. Of course, I travel 3-5 times or more a year, since all my family is out of town so I can wait until a "more expensive" trip pops up to use miles.. .
